Andy Serkis offered new insights about the upcoming "Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum," promising an unexpected approach that still honors Peter Jackson's original trilogy aesthetic. Serkis will both direct and reprise his iconic role in the film scheduled for December 2027.
The actor, returning to his signature role for the first time since 2014's "The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies," revealed the film will explore Gollum's untold story between "The Hobbit" and "Lord of the Rings" chronologies.
Speaking to Collider while promoting "Animal Farm," Serkis shared production details: "We're beginning prep soon with principal photography scheduled for early-mid 2025 to meet our 2027 release date. It's a substantial production that will shoot in New Zealand with my filmmaking family."
"We're creating something surprising that simultaneously honors the original trilogy's essence," Serkis explained. "We'll delve deeper into the complex psychology of the character originally known as Sméagol." The project marks the first of two new Middle-earth films featuring Jackson, Walsh and Boyens' involvement.
While discussing the project's connection to Jackson's trilogy, Serkis hinted at possible returning actors. Ian McKellen (Gandalf) and Viggo Mortensen (Aragorn) have both expressed interest in reprising their roles if scheduling permits.
Warner Bros. plans to expand Tolkien's cinematic universe beyond this film. Meanwhile, Amazon continues developing "The Rings of Power" Season 3, and December will see the release of the animated prequel "The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim."
