Steam, the leading digital game distribution platform for PC gamers, has once again shattered its own concurrent user record, surpassing 40 million active players for the very first time. The milestone was achieved over the weekend, coinciding with the launch of Monster Hunter Wilds on February 28, which registered 40,270,997 simultaneous users, eclipsing the previous high of 39.9 million set earlier in 2025.
According to SteamDB, the concurrent user count has consistently risen each month since May 2024, climbing from 35.5 million to the current peak of 40.2 million in just over six months. While this figure includes users who have Steam open but are not actively engaged in gameplay, the number of players actively in games also reached a new high, jumping from 12.5 million to 12.8 million.
The recent spike in activity is largely attributed to the release of Monster Hunter Wilds, which saw a 24-hour concurrent user peak of 1.38 million. Other notable titles like Counter-Strike 2, PUBG, Dota 2, and Marvel’s Avengers also contributed significantly, with respective peaks of 1.7 million, 819,541, 657,780, and 268,283 users.
Despite its popularity, Monster Hunter Wilds currently holds a mixed reception on Steam, prompting Capcom to issue official guidance addressing PC performance concerns. Additionally, Capcom has teased updates for the game, including plans to introduce an endgame social hub for players.
For newcomers, resources such as a beginner's guide, a comprehensive overview of all 14 weapon types, and a detailed walkthrough are available. Multiplayer enthusiasts can refer to guides explaining how to play with friends, while beta participants can learn how to transfer their characters to the full version.
IGN awarded Monster Hunter Wilds an 8/10, praising its refined gameplay mechanics while noting a lack of challenging content.
