Borderlands 4: Gearbox Ditches Open World for a New Adventure

Borderlands fans eagerly await the fourth installment of the popular looter-shooter series. Early trailers showcased significant advancements, particularly in scale and exploration options. However, it's crucial to understand that it's not a fully open-world game.

Gearbox Software co-founder, Randy Pitchford, explicitly stated that Borderlands 4 wouldn't be classified as "open world," citing inappropriate connotations for the game's design. While Pitchford didn't detail the specifics, the game clearly distinguishes between guided gameplay sequences and free-form exploration.

Despite this, Borderlands 4 is poised to be the franchise's biggest entry yet. Players will experience seamless traversal across all explorable areas, eliminating loading screens. To avoid aimless wandering in the expansive game world, developers have focused on creating a more structured and engaging adventure.

While a precise release date remains unannounced, a 2025 launch is anticipated. Borderlands 4 will be available on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S.
