If you've been following the gaming world, you might recall Project Mugen, the highly anticipated urban open-world RPG being developed by Naked Rain and published by NetEase. Well, there’s some big news—a name change! The game is now called Ananta, and while the developers haven’t revealed much about the switch, it seems fitting given its meaning. In Sanskrit, "Ananta" translates to "infinite," echoing the original Japanese name "Mugen," which shares the same meaning. Interestingly, even the Chinese name aligns with this concept.
After a lengthy hiatus following its announcement at Gamescom in August 2023, fans finally got a treat with a brand-new trailer. While more details are set to drop on December 5th, you can watch the official teaser for Ananta below:
The gaming community remains divided over the name change. However, most are simply glad to see progress rather than silence. Meanwhile, comparisons are already flying between Ananta and Neverness to Everness by Hotta Studio. Although Ananta's new trailer looks polished, it lacks any actual gameplay footage, giving Neverness to Everness the upper hand for now. Personally, I find Ananta’s visuals more captivating.
Here’s where things get strange. The team behind Ananta axed all their old social media accounts, including a popular YouTube channel with over 100k subscribers and millions of video views. They kept the Discord server but gave it a fresh start. Renaming existing channels would have been simpler, leaving many fans puzzled.
In Ananta, you assume the role of an Infinite Trigger, a supernatural investigator responsible for maintaining order in a chaotic world. Key characters include Taffy, Bansy, Alan, Mechanika, and Dila. For deeper insights into the game's mechanics and features, visit their official website.
