While eagerly awaiting the release of DOOM: The Dark Ages, many players are revisiting the classic DOOM and DOOM II. This renewed interest coincides with a recent update for the DOOM + DOOM II compilation. This update goes beyond simple bug fixes; it significantly enhances the technical aspects of the games.
A notable addition is support for multiplayer modifications. For compatibility, mods must be created using Vanilla DOOM, DeHackEd, MBF21, or BOOM. Cooperative gameplay has also been improved, allowing all players to collect items. A new observer mode has been introduced for players who die while in cooperative mode, enabling them to watch until revived. Further improvements include optimized multiplayer network code and a mod loader capable of handling over 100 subscribed mods.
Looking ahead to DOOM: The Dark Ages, developers are focusing on accessibility. The game will feature extensive customization options, exceeding those found in previous id Software titles. Executive producer Marty Stratton emphasizes the team's commitment to making the game accessible to a wide range of players.
Players will have granular control over various aspects of the game, including enemy damage and difficulty, projectile speed and damage, game tempo, demon aggression, and parry timing. Stratton also confirmed that prior experience with the DOOM franchise is not necessary to understand the narratives of DOOM: The Dark Ages and DOOM: Eternal.
