Looking to defeat Chatacabra in *Monster Hunter Wilds*—either by slaying it or capturing it? As one of the first creatures you’ll encounter, this tongue-wielding frog is a common foe that you'll likely hunt multiple times. Mastering how to take it down efficiently will help you gain valuable rewards and experience early on.
The Chatacabra is a relatively small frog-like monster that primarily relies on close-range attacks, most notably its long tongue. It may also charge at you if you keep your distance. As one of the easier monsters in *Monster Hunter Wilds*, it can be taken down with nearly any weapon type. However, weapons like the Bow and Charge Blade are slightly less effective due to their multi-hit nature being better suited for larger targets.
Most of Chatacabra’s dangerous moves involve its tongue, so staying directly in front of it puts you at risk. It has a lashing tongue attack and a ground slam using its front legs, which is usually preceded by it rearing up. The only major rear attack involves it lifting its head before sweeping its tongue behind itself.
To fight it effectively, position yourself to its sides and either block or dodge when it prepares a slam attack. Exploiting its elemental weaknesses (Ice and Thunder) will significantly speed up the battle. With proper positioning and element usage, you’ll have this slippery foe defeated in no time—ready to craft your new Chatacabra armor set.
Capturing Chatacabra follows the standard capture mechanics of *Monster Hunter Wilds*. One advantage here is that Chatacabra cannot fly, making it easier to manage compared to airborne foes. To successfully capture it, bring the following items:
Engage Chatacabra in battle until you notice a skull icon appear next to its indicator on the mini-map. This signals that it’s preparing to flee for the final time. Track it to its new location and set up either a Shock Trap or Pitfall Trap. Lure it into the trap and then use two Tranq Bombs to knock it out. Once asleep, the capture is complete.
