Mojang Rules Out Minecraft 2: 'Do You Think We’re Going to Have an Earth 2?'

Minecraft, the iconic game that celebrated its 15th anniversary last year, is entering its teenage years with no signs of being replaced by a sequel. During a visit to Mojang's Stockholm studio, IGN posed the question of whether the best-selling game of all time would see a follow-up. Ingela Garneij, the executive producer of Minecraft Vanilla, responded with a humorous yet definitive statement: "Do you think we're going to have an Earth 2? No, no, there's no Minecraft 2."

While the idea of Minecraft 2.0 remains firmly off the table, the survival-crafting phenomenon is set to continue its evolution. Mojang has ambitious plans to extend the game's life for at least another 15 years. Ingela Garneij, alongside Agnes Larsson, the game director of Minecraft Vanilla, is dedicated to setting the vision and strategy for the game's future. "We've existed for 15 years," Garneij remarked. "We want to exist at least 15 years more so we actually, Agnes [Larsson, Minecraft Vanilla’s game director] and I, we work as a team. We set the vision and strategy for our game for what can we do beyond that."

Mojang's commitment to innovation is driving these long-term goals, building upon the game's sturdy foundations. However, Garneij acknowledged that these foundations are showing their age, and while there are no plans for a complete engine overhaul, implementing new content like the recently announced Vibrant Visuals graphics update does take time. "I think the age of the game is a challenge," Garneij stated. "It's a 15-year-old platform, 15-year-old technology that slows us down in one sense. So other new games have new engines, and they can run really fast. So I would say the technology and our age [are our biggest challenges]."

Despite these challenges, Minecraft remains one of the world's most popular games and continues to grow without any plans to shift to a free-to-play model or incorporate generative AI technology. Fans should not expect Minecraft 2 anytime soon, but can look forward to ongoing updates and enhancements.
