11 bit Studios has unveiled their latest project in the Frostpunk series with the announcement of Frostpunk 1886, a reimagined version of the original game. This exciting news was shared on Twitter (X) on April 24, where fans learned that the game would be remade using the Unreal Engine.
Frostpunk 1886 promises to be a thrilling update to the beloved series. 11 bit Studios is shifting from their proprietary Liquid Engine, used in the original game, to the more powerful Unreal Engine. This change was inspired by their work on Frostpunk 2, which utilized Unreal Engine 5. "Our goal is to expand upon [the original] with improved visuals, higher resolution, and all the other possibilities Unreal has to offer," the developers explained in a detailed Steam post on April 24.
The remake will introduce a brand-new Purpose Path and the long-awaited mod support, ensuring that both new players and long-time fans will find something to love. The developers are committed to preserving the essence of the original game while enhancing its features and gameplay.
Currently in development, Frostpunk 1886 is slated for a 2027 release. 11 bit Studios aims to create an entry point for newcomers to the Frostpunk universe while delivering a game that veteran players will want to experience repeatedly. The studio also plans to keep the community engaged with future content, including potential DLCs.
In line with their goal to release games more frequently, Frostpunk 1886 marks the beginning of a new era for 11 bit Studios.
