Jerry Hook, former design lead for Halo Infinite, announced that his studio, Jar of Sparks, has temporarily halted development on its debut project. The studio, established in 2022 under the NetEase umbrella, had been developing what was described as a "next-generation narrative-driven action game."
Hook's LinkedIn post confirmed the studio's search for a new publishing partner to help realize their creative vision. He expressed pride in the team's innovative work and bold risks, but also acknowledged the team will be exploring new opportunities. A subsequent post clarified that Jar of Sparks will be assisting team members in finding new roles as the initial project concludes.
This isn't NetEase's first collaboration with a prominent game industry veteran. In 2022, former Resident Evil producer Hiroyuki Kobayashi also founded a studio under NetEase, GPTRACK50 Studios.
NetEase, a major global video game company, currently supports live-service titles such as Once Human and the recently launched Marvel Rivals. The latter's successful launch and ongoing development, including the upcoming addition of the Fantastic Four, contrasts with Jar of Sparks' current situation.
While Jar of Sparks is on hold, the Halo franchise, Hook's previous domain, is undergoing its own transformation. 343 Industries' rebranding to Halo Studios and the shift to Unreal Engine for future titles suggest a potential revitalization for the series.

The future remains uncertain for Jar of Sparks, but the team's dedication to innovation and the industry's interest in their work suggest a potential return with a new partner. The situation highlights the dynamic nature of game development and the challenges faced even by experienced teams.
