Hideo Kojima Plans Film Directing After Physint

Word on the street has it that Hideo Kojima's spiritual follow-up to Metal Gear, Physint, won't see the light of day for "another five or six years."

This comes straight from Kojima, who told Le Film Francais that plans to direct a movie are on ice—at least until his first "action espionage" game since his high-profile split from Konami back in 2015 is in the bag.

"Since I started my independent studio after leaving Konami, I've received a ton of game development offers with solid backing," Kojima explained (as translated by ResetEra user Red Kong XIX). "Besides Death Stranding 2, Physint is also in the works. That one's going to take me another five or six years.

"Maybe after that’s done, I could finally turn my attention to film," Kojima added. "Cinema is what shaped me. Directing would be my way of paying tribute. Plus, I'm not getting any younger—better do it while I've still got the energy!"

PlayStation Studios head Herman Hulst first pulled back the curtain on Physint in January 2024, and things have been fairly quiet ever since. At the time, Kojima hinted that it would also be a movie, but he later clarified on X/Twitter that the project will offer “look, story, theme, cast, acting, fashion, sound, etc… on another level entirely—more like a 'movie' in the evolving world of ‘Digital Entertainment.’”

This is just one of a few projects in the pipeline at Kojima Productions, which is also developing Death Stranding 2 and OD. The latter is a brand-new IP with Xbox Game Studios, with actress Hunter Schafer and filmmaker Jordan Peele named as collaborators. On top of that, Kojima is tied to A24's film take on the original Death Stranding.

Death Stranding 2: On The Beach is scheduled to launch on June 26, and Norman Reedus—lead actor in the franchise—recently dropped a hint about the film version, telling IGN he would, of course, play himself in the movie.

And not long after Kojima shared a bunch of abandoned game concepts—including one for a ‘Forgetting Game’ where the protagonist loses key memories and skills if you take too long between sessions—he let slip last week that he's handed his team a USB drive packed with game ideas to work on once he’s gone.
