Earlier this April, Nintendo Switch 2 enthusiasts spotted references to variable refresh rate (VRR) in system documentation before the details vanished. Nintendo has now provided official clarification about the VRR implementation on its upcoming console.
In a statement to NintendoLife, Nintendo addressed the confusion: "The Nintendo Switch 2 currently supports VRR exclusively in handheld mode. We regret that incorrect information initially appeared on our official website and apologize for any confusion caused."
When questioned about potential VRR support for docked mode via future updates, Nintendo stated it has "no announcements to make regarding this matter."
While Switch 2 owners will enjoy VRR benefits during portable gameplay, those using the console with TVs won't have access to this feature at launch.
The clarification follows widespread speculation after VRR references were spotted across multiple Nintendo websites before being systematically removed. Digital Foundry contributor Oliver Mackenzie documented this gradual disappearance.
Although this news may disappoint players hoping for comprehensive VRR support, there's precedent for post-launch additions – Sony expanded PS5's VRR capabilities through firmware updates. This leaves open the possibility Nintendo could follow suit.
In related news, Nintendo recently revealed numerous games receiving free performance enhancements on Switch 2, including Pokémon Scarlet & Violet and Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury. Nintendo of America president Doug Bowser assures sufficient console supply "throughout the holiday season."
