Sony has recently unveiled a new PlayStation studio named teamLFG, which has sparked excitement with the announcement of its first game. In a PlayStation Blog post, Hermen Hulst, CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment's Studio Business Group, revealed that teamLFG originated at Bungie, the developer behind Destiny and Marathon, and is currently working on an ambitious incubation project.
The name teamLFG, which stands for 'Looking For Group,' hints at a focus on social gaming. The studio's debut game is described as a team-based action game, drawing inspiration from a diverse range of genres including fighting games, platformers, MOBAs, life sims, and "frog-type games." The game will immerse players in a lighthearted, comedic world within a new, mythic, science-fantasy universe.
teamLFG's mission is to foster games where players can find friendship, community, and belonging. They aim to create an environment where players feel excited to log on and find their teammates already online, recognizing familiar names, and creating memorable moments that turn into myths and memes within the community.
The studio emphasized its commitment to developing immersive multiplayer worlds that players can learn, play, and master over countless hours. They plan to involve the community in the development process through early access playtests, ensuring they can react to player feedback both before and after launch, as they continue to evolve the game and its community over the years.

teamLFG's project emerged from Bungie amid significant layoffs in 2023 and 2024, which affected around 320 employees in total. Following the acquisition by Sony, Bungie struggled with financial targets due to declining performance of Destiny 2. Amidst these challenges, the incubation project was spun off, and 155 employees were integrated into other parts of Sony Interactive Entertainment.
Recent developments at Bungie include the full reveal of the extraction shooter Marathon and the confirmation of the future roadmap for Destiny 2. Notably, Bungie has no plans for Destiny 3 and has canceled a Destiny spinoff project called Payback. A former Bungie lawyer also praised Sony's role in pushing through improvements for Destiny 2, indicating a positive influence from the parent company.
