Fans of *Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2* are ecstatic after the game's developer, Saber Interactive, opened up its internal editor to modders. This move has sparked excitement and hope that the game could experience a longevity akin to *Skyrim*, fueled by user-generated content. Game director Dmitry Grigorenko announced this significant step towards supporting the modding community on the Space Marine 2 modding Discord, labeling it as "our biggest milestone yet."
Saber Interactive has released the official Integration Studio, the same tool used by the developers for gameplay development, for public use. This initial release enables modders to manipulate everything from level scenarios and game modes to AI behavior, abilities, melee combos, user interfaces, and HUD elements, streamlining the modding process for *Space Marine 2*.
Grigorenko reaffirmed their commitment to the modding scene, stating, “Not long ago, I promised we would support the modding scene — and we meant it. Watching this community grow, push boundaries, and create incredible experiences has been both inspiring and humbling. We’re excited to see what you build next — whether it’s a cinematic campaign, wild new game mode, or something we never saw coming.” To kick things off, he humorously shared concept art for a potential "Fishing With Daddy Calgar" mini-game, now technically feasible with the released tools. Marneus Calgar, the leader of the Ultramarines, stars in this playful idea.
The race is on to create *Space Marine 2*'s first fishing mini-game mod. To delve into the plans of the modding community, I spoke with Tom, known as Warhammer Workshop, the modder behind the acclaimed *Astartes Overhaul* mod for *Space Marine 2*. Having recently launched a mod enabling 12-player co-op, Tom now has access to all scripting tools that govern mission events and various game components like weapons and abilities.
Tom envisions possibilities such as a roguelite mode where players begin with just a combat knife and face progressively tougher enemies, with chances to acquire weapons, ammo, and health. He suggested, “Killing a Carnifex might grant you a Heavy Bolter.” While a new cinematic campaign, particularly a Chaos campaign, is within reach, creating cutscenes remains challenging due to limited access to animation tools.
Tom is currently working on integrating new factions like the Tau and Necrons into *Space Marine 2*, as modders have the necessary rigs. Meanwhile, the community is actively working on the "Fishing With Daddy Calgar" mini-game challenge set by Grigorenko.
The response from *Space Marine 2* fans has been overwhelmingly positive. Although the game is well-received and a top-selling Warhammer video game, it initially offered limited content with only three factions: Space Marines, Chaos, and the Tyrannids. While fans hoped for DLC to expand the faction roster, the availability of modding tools empowers them to enhance the game themselves.
Redditor Mortwight commented, “This is how you keep a game alive for years like Skyrim.” This development is particularly intriguing given Saber and publisher Focus Entertainment's announcement of *Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 3*. Despite concerns about potential DLC for *Space Marine 2*, both companies have reassured fans that they are not abandoning the game. With the modding tools in hand, the future looks bright for *Space Marine 2*.
