The developers at MercurySteam, alumni from Rebel Act Studios, bring a rich heritage to their latest project, Blades of Fire. Their previous work on the cult classic Severance: Blade of Darkness, released in 2001, is renowned for its unique combat system that allowed players to sever enemies' limbs, adding an element of brutality and realism that set it apart. This legacy game served as a significant source of inspiration for the team behind Blades of Fire.
While rooted in their past, MercurySteam also looked to modern action-adventure titles for inspiration. The cinematic combat and richly detailed world of Santa Monica Studio's God of War reboot particularly influenced the team. Their goal was to fuse fast-paced action with RPG elements, crafting a game that is both engaging and immersive.
A highlight of Blades of Fire is its innovative weapon crafting system. Players can forge their own blades, adjusting parameters like length, weight, durability, and balance to suit their combat style. This level of customization adds a personal touch to the gameplay, allowing players to tailor their arsenal precisely to their needs.
The game's narrative centers around the warrior Aran de Lira, who embarks on a perilous journey against a cunning queen with the power to turn metal into stone. Throughout his adventure, Aran will confront 50 distinct enemy types, each demanding a strategic approach to overcome.
Blades of Fire is set to launch on May 22, 2025, and will be available on PC via the Epic Games Store, Xbox Series, and PS5, promising a thrilling experience for fans of action and adventure.
