According to Bloodlines 2 Narrative Director Ian Thomas, the upcoming sequel leans more toward being a "roleplay module" rather than a fully open "roleplay setting" like Baldur’s Gate 3. Below, we explore the developers' vision for this new RPG experience tailored for fans of the series.

Ian Thomas, Narrative Director for Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2, clarified that the sequel offers a more tightly crafted experience compared to sprawling RPGs like Baldur’s Gate 3 and Grand Theft Auto.
Speaking with PCGamesN, Thomas was asked if the overwhelming success of Baldur’s Gate 3 had complicated Bloodlines 2's development. He acknowledged feeling some pressure to create a truly "open" world and provide what he called a "blank slate" for player freedom.
However, Thomas noted, "When you're telling a focused story, it needs structure—a shape to mold the narrative. If you give players total freedom and drop them into an open space, it becomes challenging to ensure their character remains central to the unfolding events."

The question was intended to highlight key differences between Baldur’s Gate and the original Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines. While Baldur’s Gate builds upon Dungeons & Dragons—the pioneering tabletop RPG known for freedom, choice, and collaborative storytelling—the 2004 cult classic Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines was adapted from White Wolf Publishing's 2001 TTRPG, emphasizing intrigue, mystery, and political maneuvering.
This core distinction carries over into the latest RPG adaptations. Thomas described Baldur’s Gate 3 as an "entire roleplay setting" where players drive the pace and outcome of the story. In contrast, Bloodlines 2 is a "roleplay module"—players enjoy significant freedom, but within well-defined boundaries as the narrative progresses.
He added, "It can be challenging when players see Bloodlines 2 and assume it’s a full open-world experience like GTA, where you can do anything. What we’re creating is a specific slice of time and place."

Unlike Dungeons & Dragons, which can explore countless settings and storylines, Vampire: The Masquerade is anchored in a single universe—The World of Darkness—featuring enduring factions and deep lore rooted in dark urban fantasy. This remains the foundation for Bloodlines 2, which casts players as an elder vampire named Phyre and guides them through a linear, neo-noir storyline.
Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2 launches on October 21, 2025, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. For additional details, check out the related article linked below!
